Unless you have been hiding under a rock you will by now know that Gennady Golovkin added Kell Brook to his list of scalps last night when trainer Brendon Ingle rescued his charge in the 5th round with the famous throwing of the towel.
Brook looked good in defeat slipping GGG’s punches and landing his own well picked shots. But the combination of an eye injury picked up in the first round and accumulation of punishment received from the relentless and ruthless power of Golovkin’s punches eventually took its toll on the steel city champion.
Brook now has to make a decision on whether or not to lose the weight to drop down to 147 lbs and defend his IBF welterweight title.
Errol Spence Jr is sat in the mandatory slot and would be another big money fight either in the UK or across the pond possibly in Las Vegas.
Other options for Brook include his rival Amir Khan who also looked good in defeat when he stepped up from welterweight to middle and lost by KO to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Brook can likely pick any top name in the 154 lbs division after last nights performance and the winner of Liam Smith vs Alvarez would make for a huge payday.
GGG will still chase the fight the world wants to see in a huge fight with Saul Alvarez. A fight which Canelo has said he wants but his team seem to be steering him away from at least for now. Golovkin may show signs of age and perhaps Golden Boy are protecting their fighter by delaying an inevitable fight until Golovkin is past his best.
Golovkin has stated he would fight anyone from 154 lbs up to and including 167 lbs and this gives him a huge pool to choose from including British middleweights Chris Eubank Jr and Billy Joe Saunders. ‘BJS’ currently holds the only version of the middleweight title that Golovkin has yet to win making him the more likely opponent for GGG’s next bout.
Personally I think the Eubank Jr fight is more exciting as ‘BJS’ seems to lack the punching power needed to slow Golovkin down but he does have a win over Eubank in his drawer and the title he won from Andy Lee.
