Aged 52, Rab has 32 years of valuable experience in the boxing industry.

He was born in Hull and currently lives in Plymouth with his fiancée.

Outside of boxing Rab has many other likes including:

Football, cinema, dining out with his fiancée, drinking beer occasionally, listening to reggae and Northern soul, walking the dogs.

Boxing Career

The proud Ipswich Town fan was once nominated as a Royal Navy Sportsperson of the Year in the Plymouth Herald Sportsperson of the Year awards.

10155223_10152582600388925_2058732135986172892_n

He started boxing aged 20 and has stuck with it as he finds it exciting.

I had a fight in the street that I didn’t win nor lose, but it inspired me to get in a gym and learn to deal with s*#t like that. I started the fight because the person who I had the ruck with, had started on me previously about a year before and when I was getting the better of him, his mates jumped me and kicked the crap out of me.

Having gained experience as an amateur boxer for the Royal Navy boxing team Rab turned his hand to coaching and is now concentrating on getting his boxers matched regularly and aims to take a fighter to the pinnacle of their boxing career.

rab 1

Rab coaches at Saltash ABC and Taurus MMA. He is semi-retired, working part time as a support worker.

When asked about his worst experience in boxing Rab said that he didn’t have any to speak of but if he could change anything…..

If it isn’t broke, why fix it? Head guards stop cuts, so why remove them and then expect males to box in the Olympics/Worlds/Commonwealths days on the bounce when the boxers haven’t grasped the concept of moving their heads or keeping their hands up? The WSB, what on earth is that all about? Where’s the dividing line between Ams and Pros? You qualify for the Olympics by winning a WSB and then go back as an amateur? Talk about confusion?

426751_2418793848892_1917597168_n

He said that his best experiences have been meeting people and making loads of friends.

His favourite fighter is Marvin Haggler and if he could fight like anyone who would it be?

Manny Pacquiao, the man is a whirlwind.

Funniest story about boxing?

Howard Foster for his stoppage of Max Maxwell against Tom Doran and also Carl Froch against George Groves in their first scrap. Blokes a Muppet! If he wasn’t serious when he stopped those fights you’d think he was having a laugh.

Harry Armstrong

Harry (the HATC) Armstrong, or ‘Harry the beast’ is a 21-year-old 100 kg Super-Heavyweight Amateur Boxer from Camden, London.

Currently living in Torquay with his Mum, Dad, and 2 sisters he trains and fights out of Devonport ABC under the tuition and guidance of Johnny Friend and Steve Bugdale.

At the age of just 12 Harry’s dad took him along to Apollo ABC in Torquay as he was often fighting in school and on the rugby pitch and thought a boxing club but be a better place to channel that energy. Harry has been previously trained by Alan Brightman, David Armstrong and Glynn Mitchell.

From the moment I smelt the gloves and set eyes on the gym I knew that’s where my future lay. Barely a day passes where I don’t lace up a pair of boxing gloves. I love it!

Harry has had great success so far as an Amateur winning 14 out of 25 bouts. He is a former National Junior ABA champion and has reached the Senior Novice National semi-finals.

264217_1796030304478_2461097_n10492100_10202195284269741_6620303459035358419_n

He is due out next on the 4th December this year in a warm up for the National Championships next year.

My short-term goals are to win all my fights and get as far as possible in this seasons elite ABAs.

Harry is doing everything he can to improve his chances of success and currently trains five  to 6 days a week, 3 nights at Devonport ABC who he now fights for, and 2 nights at his former club, the Apollo ABC. He works a full-time day job as a roofer but not before getting up for his runs. He also puts in extra sessions for strength and conditioning.

1458430_10201072306833771_1354405957_n

He has an impressive sparring resume having sparred with former British & Commonwealth and current European title holder Dereck Chisora, Ben Ileyemi (Cousin to Olympic Gold medalist Anthony Joshua), Hughie Fury, Tyson Fury and Eddie Chambers.

When asked why he puts in so much he said:

I love boxing because it’s one of the toughest sports in the world! It’s 1 man vs another and once u step between the ropes and all the hard work has been done, it’s time to enjoy the fight and pit yourself against the best! Boxing is like no other sport. The fitness required is second to none and the sacrifice and dedication you put yourself through is so hard, but I love it. I love getting up at 5.45am for my runs before work and finishing training at 9pm after work. I love to push myself to my limits every day and improve. It’s the best feeling when you  crawl home knowing you’ve trained your hardest. The more training the better for me. It leaves you buzzing to get into the ring. Fight night is what I live for!

In the future, ‘The HATC’ wants to turn professional and emulate his hero Mike Tyson by going all the way to the top and winning a world Heavyweight title.

My favorite fighter of all time is Mike Tyson. He was incredible and I would like to be able to mix his raw animal skill, power and ability with a style like Anthony Joshua’s. My style is  skillful, sat back, rangey and  set a very hard and fast pace. I have full belief I can become a heavyweight world champion! I cannot wait to prove myself and a lot of other people right!

Harry lives for his boxing and when he isn’t training or fighting he is catching up with the action as he loves to watch the other amateurs as well as the professionals on television.

Harry would like to say a few words to round off the article on his experience at Camp Chisora and a few thanks.

On Chisora….

I have recently been lucky enough to be invited to spar with Derek Chisora. I went for a day and then they asked me to stay all and be a part of the camp. Chisora was in absolute top form, he hits like a train. I did quiet a few rounds with him in which he worked through many gears and I felt I improved as the rounds went on and handled myself extremely well. Don Charles (Chisora’s manager and trainer) was very happy and impressed with the way I sparred and handled myself in the ring . It was a fantastic experience and I learned a great deal. I proved myself at the top-level and now I look forward to turning professional and becoming the beast I can become!!

Acknowledgements and thanks:

I’d like to thank my family who have supported me fantastically to date as well as my friends and sponsors. Josh Langford my best mate, who is always there for me. Neil Pittam from ‘You need energy’ who has supported me, believed in me and backed me since he first met me!  ‘Vain Train’ who have supplied  my amazing ‘VT  training kit’ and Pete the Dentist who has sponsored me and made sure I’ve been able to get to and from training and travel the country for quality sparring. I have top people, family and support around me and I couldn’t thank them all enough!

Courtney (FAT BOY) Richards

Courtney Richards loves to fight.

STEPHEN_SIMMONS_v_COURTNEY_RICHARDS_OFFI_197178051_thumbnail

He came to our attention when he agreed to fight Stephen Simmons on the under-card of Josh Warrington’s European title fight in Leeds. In his own words he has often stated that he will fight anyone and this has been proven when he has gone on the road to fight guys with winning records like Simmons, China Clarke (13-1-1), Paul Drago (5-0), and Lawrence Bennett (4-0).

With a walk forward aggressive style he is entertaining to watch as you can see from his video clips towards the bottom of the page.

He started boxing on a whim at the age of 19 whilst trying to cut weight to play rugby. His brother was losing weight fast and looking good so he asked him how he was doing it and then joined in.

3777_1147154325839_5270431_n

As a sports and fitness fanatic who already played rugby at a highly competitive level and also likes to run, swim and cycle, the ‘Fat Boy’ took to boxing like a duck to water. Finding out how much he liked the adrenaline rush of dangerous sports got him hooked, when asked about what he loves about boxing so much he replied;

I get to punch people without getting into trouble!

10553371_10204536122309848_6752941743040349755_n

He says his worst experience to date is getting his jaw broken on a night out and being told he would never box again. Fortunately he was able to.

Courtney started as an amateur out of Carl’s Boxing stable under the tuition of Carl Robson. He had 12 amateur fights and finished with a winning record.

1957986_10203558328945625_1890574017_n

Richards regards his best career achievement to date  as turning professional and aims to make it big as a pro by going as far as he can winning as many titles possible along the way.

10001445_10204038269583841_8992483824640248239_n

With a current record of 4-4-2 with 1 KO, Courtney has decided to make some changes to the way his boxing career is going.

He is currently training hard to lose bodyfat to compete at Light-Heavyweight or Super-Middleweight where he will more likely be stronger at the weight and with less body fat, more athletic overall.

1620610_10203295812342874_1933045183_n

He has also parted ways with trainer Carl Robson in favor of Erol Johnson and his team in Birmingham.

Courtney is also currently managed and promoted by Erol, and co-promoted by UKO Promotions (Daniel Mole).

1233483_10202129135176674_1790623670_n

Due to how much he enjoys the sport and the attention that comes with it Courtney is a full-time Pro who trains as much as he possibly can. He admits that his diet hasn’t always been the greatest hence the nickname ‘Fat-Boy’ but is now concentrating on getting everything to where it should be in order to improve on his 4 wins.

10380273_10204030834757975_7951855982216537228_n

When you will fight anyone, you are bound to come up against it sometimes as Courtney’s record shows, but his grit and determination are second to none.

When I was still boxing as an amateur, I had a really bad tooth-ache before I was due to travel away for a fight. I took a whole pack of paramol on the way up there and was very drowsy in the changing room before the fight. I went out in the ring and knocked the kid out in the 2nd round!

Courtney is now facing leaving his friends and family behind in Plymouth whilst he moves to Birmingham to train with Erol Johnson at Wensbury boxing club. It’s a brave move and we look forward to seeing how things change for him.

66929_10153001962295080_797622921_n

Outside of the ring Courtney loves his rugby and other sports and spending time with his mates and family but boxing has brought him good things both between and outside of the ropes.

The best thing boxing has gave me is meeting plenty of famous faces & many great boxers! Also being noticed by the public when walking around my city, I love stopping to speak to people about boxing!

Courtney would like to give thanks to everyone who has helped him so far in his career and supported him as well as his sponsors listed below.

Darren Townley

Updated, July 2015 by Lee Russell.

‘The Terminator’ Darren Townley is a real prospect for the future of Plymouth Boxing.

Darren is a 27 year old Light-Welterweight (64KG) professional boxer from Plymouth.

Darren is an encouraging crowd puller and is followed by many boxing fans from as far as the USA. He regularly makes the local papers sports pages and the city has high hopes for him as a professional.

Whilst working as a boat builder for a world renowned company by day, Darren became one of the most hard working amateurs around usually training twice a day on top of working a full time job.

In 2012 whilst on a training camp out in the United States, he was fortunate enough to get some quality sparring at Edwin Valeros gym with some professional Mexican fighters and embark in some training at the world renowned ‘Wild Card Gym‘ with the likes of trainer Freddie Roach and former world champion and Olympic Silver medalist Amir Khan.

Darren started out training with well know trainer Glynn Mitchell who matched him up against stiff competition almost immediately and after several fights was already fighting opponents with over 60 bouts to their name. Darren progressed quickly and is now ‘open class’ having had over 25 bouts himself.

At age 27, Darren has made his move to the professional ranks. He has been working with James Bodley at ‘Total Rebuild’ to improve his strength and conditioning and concentrating on his key fitness at ‘Club Continental‘.

Temecula Townley. The Terminator in California

There are simply not enough words to express the amount of effort Darren Townley puts into his boxing.

Anyone who knows him, will say that for Darren, training is all about distances.

10 kilometers, 15 kilometers, half marathons or the 5037 Miles!!!! he has traveled for the second time now to train with the stars in California!

Semi-Pro or Semi-Stupid.

In my home town of Plymouth there are very few professional fighters, very few professional trainers and not a very good selection of sparring partners.  Also the amateur scene is sparse and those guys also struggle to find quality sparring.

Plymouth is the 14th biggest city in the country so are there more fighters out there? The answer is yes. There are loads. There is a good MMA scene with some good gyms and quality organisation and there is also this thing you may have heard of called Semi-Pro Boxing.

I have noticed over the last few years that people flock to these events in their hundreds paying up to £30 a ticket to watch unlicensed fights between often mismatched competitors who haven’t really had enough training to compete in open combat. I appreciate some of these guys train really hard and mean no disrespect to anyone at all but I believe this craze is hurting the sport of boxing specifically in Plymouth.

If these guys really want to earn money from fighting then find a pro trainer and there are a few about and turn professional.  Then work bloody hard in training and see how far you can go.
I will even buy tickets to come and watch you box!

If you haven’t had any fights and want to start fighting then join an official ABAE registered amateur gym. There are plenty of good amateur coaches around. Who knows where this will take you.

I’ve heard unlicensed boxing labelled up as ‘white collar’ and ‘semi-pro’ for a while now.  I’d like to point out this is not the case. It is ‘unlicensed boxing’.
No regulated officials are involved meaning competitors are at risk of being unfairly scored or not protected by stoppage of a fight when it is required.
The sports governing bodies have strict medical guidelines and drug testing to help protect fighters from competing when it is not safe to do so. Unlicensed boxing has none of these guidelines.

Obviously unlicensed boxing is currently not illegal as it is publicly advertised and held in public clubs and hotels but I ask you to think about which of the sports you choose to compete in or watch.

I would much rather pay money to an amateur or professional show knowing that a lot of the money is going back into the sport I love.

It’s you’re choice.

I have written to the government regarding the issue and have started a petition to ban unlicensed boxing.
