I recently Profiled Nathan Hill (AKA Coach Troopa)for GW Boxing.
I enjoyed talking with Troops so much I couldn’t resist a little follow up article with some interview questions.
Everyone loves Troops!
WHEN DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN BOXING?
I started boxing myself at the age of 13 till about 18 years old. And then I stopped for a few years to carry on with my career back then as a DJ. After a few years of DJing all over Europe and becoming really fat I started back training, but this time it was kickboxing. I had a good run at it and fought for 3 titles, Welsh, Celtic and a Intercontinetal.
I got bored of the kickboxing and then went back to my old boxing gym, Ronnie Rush Gym in Ely Cardiff and carried on with the boxing. I moved down pymouth 3 years ago and got put onto Nigel Christian and Glyn Mitchell by ex world champ Carl Greaves to turn pro. Training was going brilliant and I cut loads of weight but my back went and I had to have an emergency operation. I was out for 6 months then and tried going back, but my back couldn’t hold out on the training. Ever since the op my back hasn’t been right so thats when I decided to become a boxing coach
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE BOXING INDUSTRY?
I’ve always been a mad boxing fanatic and always wanted to start it. I used to beg my dad to find me a gym and then Ronnie Rush Gym opened up in my area. So my dad took me along. They trained world champion Steve Robinson out of that gym too and it was cool to train alongside him.
WHERE DO YOU DO THE MAJORITY OF YOUR WORK?
I train a selection of white collar, amateur and professional boxers and MMA fighters out of The Doghouse Boxing Gym and the Plymouth Performance Gym.
DO YOU EVER DO ANY TRAINING YOURSELF?
Me myself as a trainer I try and train 3 to 4 times a week. But when I’m doing 7 to 8 hours of pads a day, all I want to do is go home and cuddle my kids haha. My good friend and 1 of the best strength and conditioning coaches I know of William Badenoch (the owner of Plymouth performance gym) puts me through some good strength and conditioning sessions.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT TRAINING OR PADDING FIGHTERS?
Spend every bit of time with my little family. Apart from a thursday where I get an hour to myself and read the weekly boxing news magazine haha.
WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON FOR YOU RECENTLY?
I’ve just started working alongside one of the best professional boxing coaches in the South West of Devon Glyn Mitchell. Working with a nice little stable of pro boxers and some good guys who are ready to turn pro, I wont mention names just yet……
IF YOU COULD ALTER OR CHANGE SOMETHING IN BOXING WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?
I’d like to create and independent match making governing body thats responsible for putting together the fights that everyone wants to see,
For example “khan your fighing kell brook and thats it haha”. They could impose fines and be dropped in the rankings if the fights are refused with out a legitimate reason.
IT’S A VERY CHEESY QUESTION, BUT WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE FIGHTER?
I have a few. Emanual Augustus, Gabirel Rosado, Andrew Tibiti, GGG, Tim Bradley, Carl Froch….. Well to be honest I love watching them all, if 2 flys could box I’d probably love watching that too haha.
