Liam Desmond v Kieron Gray post fight with team

Unbeaten middleweight prospect Liam Desmond gets Chris Jenkinson test on June 20

Undefeated Essex boxer, Liam Desmond 4-0 will get a tough test on June 20th at Grays Civic Hall when he takes on the seasoned Chris Jenkinson 8-18-2 on a Carl Greaves Promotions show.

The 21-year-old middleweight from Corringham, Essex commented on the step up,

I feel ready and I can’t wait to do the rounds, I’ve been training really hard for it.

The step up in class for Desmond goes hand-in-hand with an increase in rounds as he enters into his first six round contest on his fifth professional fight.

The 32-year-old travelling opponent from Bolton, Chris Jenkinson, certainly has the upper hand where experience is concerned, participating in four title fights in the past two years and collecting the International Masters middleweight title and International Masters Silver light-middleweight title in the process.

The qualified Lanky has also upset young prospects before namely when he stopped an unbeaten Adam Battle in three rounds at Bluewater’s newly built ‘Glow’ arena in Kent in November 2013.

Desmond commented on his forthcoming opponent,

He’s been in with one of the Upton boys recently and he’s had some good experience, obviously winning a few titles. He’s beaten Nicky Jenman and Adam Battle before but I’ve not seen much of him though.

He continued to say,

I’m very confident, I only think about winning and I want to put on a good show. My first four wins have given me more confidence but I will take it as it comes.

The 6ft 2” tall middleweight, Liam Desmond, recently moved up to 4-0 on March 14th after defeating Rob Brown 1-1 at the same setting for all of his pro fights to date, the Civic Hall, Grays.

That previous win marked the former West Ham ABC amateur’s first full year in the professional ranks, he said of his debut year,

I’ve settled in really good now, each fight I’ve improved and I’m really enjoying it so I really can’t complain at all with my first year. I haven’t rushed the amount of fights but I’ve been regular enough.

Desmond completed his induction into the paid ranks successfully with wins over Liam Griffiths 3-37-1 on his pro bow on March 15th last year, Dee Mitchell 9-63-1 four months later in July, Kieran Gray 6-35-1 another four months apart in November, and the latest triumph over the unbeaten Rob Brown who came into the fight having defeated the same opponent in Kieran Gray just a few weeks earlier than Desmond did.

The young talent had already discussed plans to start increasing the rounds and calibre of opponents with his coach, Kevin Lilley and promoter, Carl Greaves straight after his previous outing.

Desmond explained,

I don’t want to take backwards steps now, I want to progress and I want the hard fights because it makes you learn more.

I’d like to finish the year as a Masters champion. I talked about it in a chat with Kevin [Lilley] and hopefully I’ll move on to bigger fights next year. For now, it’s about getting my name out there and some more wins under my belt.

The undercard features many of Desmond’s teammates with 25-year-old, Darrel Church 2-0 making his ring return after a brief respite from boxing. The Tiptree boxer goes up against Angelo Crowe 2-6 in a four round light-heavyweight contest.

The only other six rounder features 34-year-old light heavyweight, Paul Hilz 1-0 up against County Durham’s 28-year-old, Steve Cooper 2-1.

Dagenham super-flyweight, Shaun Hussein 1-0 takes on Tamworth’s Josh O’Donnell 0-1.

Super-featherweight, Martin Hillman 3-2 from Orpington is the only boxer on the show without an opponent scheduled yet.

Joe Jackson Brown 1-0 impressed on his debut last March with a third round KO victory over fellow debutant, Charlie Brown. The 22-year-old light-heavyweight will be looking to double his win tally against journeyman, Jamie Ambler 11-59-2.

Welterweight debutant, George Hennon makes his pro bow against veteran, Matt Seawright 5-113-5 in what will be the 37-year-old away fighter’s 124th professional contest.
