Dean Gillen eager for next fight after coming through hard debut win

Dean Gillen glovesAfter coming through his professional debut with a hard-earned points win over fellow debutant, Shaun White at the Britannia Hotel in Nottingham on May 23rd, Dean Gillen is eager to get back into the ring for his second pro fight.

The firefighter from Arnold, Nottingham said, “I spoke to Carl [Greaves] and he’s planning on getting me out again in September, but I’m really keen to get out before then even if I have to travel.”

He continued, “He’s [Carl Greaves] keen to get another Nottingham show on again as the show on the 23rd May at the Britannia Hotel was such a success, it was only four fights on the schedule but they were all cracking bouts.”

Gillen engaged White in a war in the middle of the ring for four adrenaline-filled rounds in front of a raucous home crowd with referee, Shaun Messer scoring the fight at 39-37 to the home fighter.

“I only had limited amateur experience whereas Shaun White had over 60 fights,” said Gillen. “I watched him and he looked like a one pace fighter and I wasn’t 100% fit but when I got in there he literally came at me like a bullet, round after round. I was never going to back down, but really I should have used my reach advantage. Prior to the bout, I knew what I needed to do, but this is what makes boxing so difficult, it’s so hard to stick to the game plan.”

Preceding his inauguration, the Nottingham firefighter won gold in The World Police and Fire Games in 2013 by knocking out all of his opponents but has no formal amateur experience to call upon.

“It was a sharp learning curve and to get through it the way that I did, it’s definitely a good experience for the future and it’s certainly not done any harm with the people that bought tickets because they got value for money and enjoyed it.”

Gillen vows to reap the benefits from the tough education received in his opening fight, saying, “I think next time I will be more disciplined but ultimately your personality comes out in the ring and I do like a good tear up so they’ll always get their value for money in that respect.”

The middleweight discussed his future plans for his pro career, “Ideally I’d like to have another couple of fights under my belt before Christmas so to get to three or four unbeaten by the end of this year would be great and maybe by the start of next year it might put me in place for a shot at a Masters title, then who knows?

“I’d love to get in a position where I could fight for an Area title but realistically I can’t be fighting like I did in my debut so I’ll be working hard in the gym to improve!”

Team Deano rallied some good support for his pro bow in his home county of Nottinghamshire, he confirmed, “I had around 70 people there in support, a lot of my colleagues at the fire station couldn’t make it because it was my watch on duty that night.”

The 32-year-old has since enjoyed a taste of fame following his brutal induction into the paid ranks, “I’ve had a lot of interest since gaining my professional license,” said Gillen. “I’ve been on TV and had a double page spread in the local paper. I’ve had people come up to me in the street

and said they’ll come and support me for my next fight. I’ve even got a new sponsor off the back of my debut performance, it’s a new barbers in Nottingham called Jacks of London, they’re all big boxing fans and they saw me in the local newspaper, The Nottingham Post. I’ve already got an American sponsor and a local restaurant called The Townhouse and it seems like everyone’s getting behind me, which is great.”

The likeable middleweight concluded, “I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone that bought tickets especially family and close friends that paid to be ringside and just everyone spending their hard-earned money to watch me. I’ll always give it 110% every time so you can get your money’s worth.”
