Whilst the UK pound for pound number 1 Carl Froch threatens to retire if he can’t make a last fight in Las Vegas, both Amir Khan and Andy Lee have jumped the queue and get their chance to show the boxing world what they can do there in the early hours of Sunday morning (UK time).
Amir Khan (29-3 KO19) finally comes face to face in a boxing ring with 2 weight world champion Devon Alexander after pulling out of their 2013 scheduled bout as he believed he was next in line to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Devon Alexander (26-2 KO14) is well-known on UK shores as the man who took Junior Witter’s world title at light-welterweight and had a fight with Kell Brook cancelled after 3 postponements. He also stopped Colchester’s Lee Purdy in Lee’s only world title shot back in 2013.
Since then, Devon has lost his IBF welterweight world title in a 12 round points loss to Shawn Porter who then lost the same title in his next fight to the same Kell Brook who was mandatory challenger to Alexander. In Devon’s last fight, he managed to get back to winning ways over 10 rounds vs Jesus Soto Karass.
Khan has been accused of over looking his opponents in the past. This was after he faced Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia (both of which he lost too) as he was linked with a big money fight with Floyd Mayweather.
If Khan was to make a similar mistake and lose to Alexander he would likely miss out on the big fights he says he should be in and have to rebuild his career once again.
His promoters Golden Boy have publicly promised that if he overcomes Devon then the he will be in a huge fight such as Pacquiao or Mayweather. He is also heavily linked with a domestic grudge match with IBF world champion Kell brook (32-0), and this fight would likely take place at Wembley Stadium with Sky Box Office PPV and HBO backing.
Both Khan and Alexander have said publicly that they think that their speed and power over each other will be the difference on the night and they have both predicted KO victories. Therefore the fans should be in for an exciting fight!
Many believe if Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao don’t fight in May then the winner of Khan vs Alexander will be the obvious choice as Mayweather’s next opponent.
On the undercard of the Timothy Bradley vs Diego Chavez show the same night, Ireland’s middleweight contender Andy Lee gets his second shot at a world title when he takes on Matt Korobov for the vacant WBO 160lb title.
Korobov, who is 31 years old stands undefeated with a record of 24-0 with 14 stoppages.
He gives away a year of youth to the Irishman who has lost 2 of his own 35 professional bouts both of which by stoppage.
Andy hopes that his experience and power (23 ko victories) will give him the edge on fight night and he can go one step further than when he lost by stoppage to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr 2 and a half years ago.
